My Tutoring Philosophy

I tutor SAT and ACT English and Critical Reading by providing my students with an accessible study plan, test-taking strategies, and useful rules and tips which they can apply immediately. Through observing my own trial-and-errors during the last five years, I have learned to genuinely communicate with my students and improve from feedback I consistently request.

After a tutoring session with me, the majority of my students will comment, “That was VERY helpful! Thanks for actually helping me understand.” The parents and educational consultants who work with me will often refer my services to their friends and clients based on consistent positive reviews from my students.

Thanks Jennifer, you are always there to help.
– K.Y. from Beijing, China

I feel you are not only a tutor, you just like an educator. My English is not good, I hope I can express clearly for you. You have very clear instruction and reading plans, you also sent many resources for my son to help him get more information to enrich the article's content. I think by joining the school, the only best thing is to have you be D's tutor. D changed lot of other subject tutors in the past. Only you are still here :)
– Parent of D.K. from Palo Alto, CA

Your tutoring services are really helpful academically. I learned a lot of grammar and improved my reading comprehension. Games you provided us to play are really fun and I enjoyed them, especially "Dominion". Also, the books you recommend are really interesting. I can't think of any ways you might improve - your tutoring is already really good.
– E.Y. from Los Altos, CA

I chose you as a tutor because you actually help me understand. I dropped the SAT class I was taking because the teachers just told us the right answer just "makes sense" or "sounds right" which didn't help me at all. It helps that you speak Chinese but you also explain the answer really well.

My goal is to help students become independent after teaching them test strategies and study habits so I only keep long-term students if they need assistance in areas other than test preparation.

What to Bring

  • Diagnostic Test that has been completed, corrected, and self-scored.
  • Your previous test scores broken down by each section.
  • Your upcoming test date. I will not take students who have less than two months to prepare for their tests unless under special circumstances.

A Note to ESL/ELL Students

I've taught many of Gunn High School's ELL students and from my experience helping them with test preparation, I express the following advice: start early. Far too often, senior ELL students will come to me a month before their last SAT, ACT, or TOEFL test and hope for a miracle. I abhor seeing my students fail but, unfortunately, ELL students have to work harder since they lack the foundation which many American kids already have, such as basic vocabulary, knowledge of idiomatic prepositional phrases, and reading comprehension abilities. This is the reason why I want ELL students to read, everyday, starting today. It is one habit that will help them immensely in all aspects of English proficiency.

What to Expect

  • I will meet with students at least two months before their next test date to determine their starting level and set target score goals. During the first two sessions, we will review the diagnostic test errors to determine any knowledge gaps and weaknesses.
  • After we've reviewed the diagnostic, I will teach: test strategies for reading comprehension and sentence completion, grammar rules and common mistakes for the writing sections, and requirements for a great essay score.
  • I will assign homework such as: vocabulary flash cards, practice drills, reading assignments, and practice essay prompts. Practice is crucial in improving test scores so I expect the homework to be completed.
  • As students start to get familiar with the tests, I will ask them to take practice full-length tests every other weekend to track progress.
